چکیده

We examine the bar instability in models with an exponential disk and a cuspy NFW-like dark matter (DM) halo inspired by cosmological simulations. Bar evolution is studied as a function of numerical resolution in a sequence of models spanning 10 DM particles including a multi-mass model with an effective resolution of 10. The goal is to find convergence in dynamical behaviour. We characterize the bar growth, the buckling instability, pattern speed decay through resonant transfer of angular momentum, and possible destruction of the DM halo cusp. Overall, most characteristics converge in behaviour for halos containing more than 10 particles in detail. Notably, the formation of the bar does not destroy the density cusp in this case. These higher resolution simulations clearly illustrate the importance of discrete resonances in transporting angular momentum from the bar to the halo.

Bars and Dark Matter Halo Cores

Self-consistent bars that form in galaxies embedded within cuspy halos are unable to flatten the cusp. Short bars form in models with quasi-flat rotation curves. They lose angular momentum to the halo through dynamical friction, but the continuous concentration of mass within the disk as the bar grows actually compresses the halo further, overwhelming any density reduction due to the modest ang...

Stellar Bar Evolution in Cuspy and Flat-cored Triaxial Cdm Halos

We analyze the formation and evolution of stellar bars in galactic disks embedded in mildly triaxial cold dark matter (CDM) halos that have density distributions ranging from large flat cores to cuspy profiles. We have applied tailored numerical simulations of analytical and live halos which include the feedback from disk/bar system onto the halo in order to test and extend earlier work by El-Z...

Se p 20 02 How black holes turn cusps into cores

Collapsing collisionless particle systems form gravitational bound halos with cuspy density profiles. Also hierarchical merging of these systems produce remnants with cuspy central density profiles. These results lead to the assumption of cuspy NFW [5] profiles for the density distribution in dark matter halos. However, observed rotation curves in disk galaxies suggest dark matter halos with is...

Galaxy Masses: Disks and Their Halos

I review what we currently do and do not know about the masses of disk galaxies and their dark matter halos. The prognosis for disks is good: the asymptotic rotation velocity provides a good indicator of total disk mass. The prognosis for halos is bad: cuspy halos provide a poor description of the data, and the total mass of individual dark matter halos remains ill-constrained.

Constraints on the Radial Mass Distribution of Dark Matter Halos from Rotation Curves

Rotation curves place important constraints on the radial mass distribution of dark matter halos, ρ(r). At large radii, rotation curves tend to become asymptotically flat. For ρ(r) ∝ r, this implies α ≈ −2, which persists as far out as can be measured. At small radii, the data strongly prefer dark matter halos with constant density cores (α ≈ 0) over the cuspy halos (α ≤ −1) predicted by cosmol...
